I’ve been asked before about how to choose the best pocket knife for a woman. My perspective on this is that, male or female, it doesn’t matter.
Self defense companies like to make products that are specifically “for women,” which is to say that they’re pink in color or shaped like some kind of makeup product.
Needless to say, I’m not a fan.
However, to get a female perspective on the subject, I reached out to a friend – let’s call her Jennifer – to write this post. If you don’t have the time to read the whole post, our top pick is the Spyderco Delica 4, a great pocket knife for men AND women!
Take it away, Jennifer!
It’s 2018 and women are still looking for ways to defend themselves.
Good news though: there are way cooler ways to do that now. While the keys between your fingers in a parking lot is a classic, it is made more effective with knives that are specifically designed for the job of protecting you.
People set on taking advantage of women in dark areas may come prepared for a shot of pepper spray and a struggle. Some will back off in the interest of not making a scene, while others require more force to stop.
While the best advice is often to let a criminal run off with your valuables and leave you with your life, sometimes the situation calls for more.
Preparing to defend yourself as a woman
You have to be prepared to fight for your life these days.
With any form of weapon, knowing how to use it is the best way to enhance its effectiveness. Self-defense training is vital, and helps to keep you and your loved ones safe.
As for weapons, this is often a matter of preference. Defensive Planet has a great buyer’s guide to help you choose. But if you’re in the market for a pocket knife that has lethal stopping power, you’ve come to the right place.
Pocket knives for self defense
There are plenty of knives that are small enough to conceal, but have essentially the same effectiveness of a larger knife. That is to say, they will cut whatever is in front of you when you strike.
You also have to consider your situation when choosing a pocket knife. For example, a college student might be an ideal candidate for a knife disguised as a key, whereas a mother with small children is not – because kids love to play with Mom’s keys.
Here are my picks for some great pocket knives for women:
Spyderco Delica 4 Knife
- RELIABLE HIGH PERFORMANCE - The Delica 4 family includes a full range of handle colors, blade grinds, and edge configurations, as well as a blunted training version and a model with the Emerson Opening
- SUPERIOR BLADE STEEL - The VG-10 blade has a flat saber-ground grind with a stronger tip and larger 13mm opening hole.
- ULTRA-LIGHTWEIGHT - Inside the handle are dual skeletonized stainless steel liners which strengthen the knife without additional weight and double as an anchor for external and internal components to attach through generating more sturdiness.
- ERGONOMIC - Added to the blade's spine is slip resistant jimping. Phosphor bronze washers smooth out the open/close action and the clip is upgraded to a four-way tip-up, tip-down, left-or right-handed clip.
- A SECURE GRIP - Molded onto the FRN handle's surface is Bi-Directional Texturing for slip-free tactile traction. It provides resistance to slipping in the hand.
This little knife packs quite a punch as an everyday carry knife.
The VG-10 Flat Saber-Ground blade is quite durable, despite its small size. The blade is 3 inches long, and the total weight of the knife is about 2.5 ounces.
The main advantage of the small size is that you can put the knife on your keychain or attached to your purse for a fast and convenient draw. In addition, keeping it inside your purse or on your waistband is also a possibility too.
Another advantage, for the aesthetically-inclined anyway, is that Spyderco offers the Delica in several different colors. Most knife manufacturers only make knives in the color black.
This makes it easy to find a knife that feels more personalized. Some of the available colors of the Delica are rather bright, which makes it easy to find in your purse in the event of an emergency – another big plus.
One important thing to consider when choosing a blade is how the knife opens. Different opening mechanisms appeal to different people, so choose one with something you’re comfortable with.
If you don’t have a preference, Spyderco’s standard thumb hole open is a great one for beginners and experts alike. However, you may prefer something like Benchmade’s axis lock opening.
Ka-Bar TDI Law Enforcement Knife Fixed Blade
- Complete length- 5 5/8 inches, Blade length- 2 5/16 inches
- Drop point edge
- Blade quality- AUS-8A stainless steel blade
- Hardness of steel- 57-59 HRC
- Includes a black handle and sheath
This handy knife is designed for close quarter’s defense in the event that a police officer is unable to reach their firearm. It can also be used for civilian or self-defense purposes too.
It is small, measuring in at a little under 6 inches, and can be concealed in your pocket or waistband. The Ka-Bar TDI does have a fixed blade, which makes it ready to use straight out of the sheath. No fumbling around trying to open this knife in a defensive situation.
This advantage with this knife is that it is a shredding knife and not a stabbing knife. You are more likely to see tissue spray rather than arterial spray because of the shredding design. This means that the knife is deadly in even the most inexperienced hands.
The disadvantage is that fixed blade knives may not be legal in your jurisdiction or may have specific limitations. I suggest you do some research on your local knife laws before buying.
Snake Eye Tactical Assisted Open Folding Drop Point Blade
If your significant other has ever complained that you don’t buy her pretty things, then this is the perfect blade. It is a lethal weapon with a pretty and sophisticated handle. It opens extremely fast and the handle makes it easy to spot.
The knife is rather large at 9 inches, which makes it better suited for carrying in a purse or a bag than on your person. A big advantage with the Snake Eye is that in the heat of the moment it is easy to find, which may make up for a slower response time.
American Flag Folding Pocket Knife Keychain
Show that you are proud to be an American and defend yourself at the same time. While it may be a little kitschy, some may want to sport the stars and stripes on their pocket knife.
This knife measures in at 3.4 inches overall and has a 1.4 inch blade, so the form factor is very small. This essentially makes it a razor blade with a point and a handle.
Do not let the small size fool you. You can easily carry this knife on your keychain and quickly get ready to defend yourself. What it lacks in size it makes up for in speed and its ease of carrying.
Plus, it makes a convenient tool in the event you need to do any cutting.
This knife is would not likely be considered a very “lethal” knife by anyone. However, it may create a lot of bleeding no matter what part of the body you hit.
We call this a diversionary device. An attacker that has their arm slashed may go into a temporary shock, which may give you enough time to escape.
Wrap-up: choosing the knife that’s right for you
It’s David again. Thanks for your insight, Jennifer!
As men, we want to protect the women in our lives, and for women, most just want to feel safe. If you are looking for an answer to keep your loved ones safe, then I recommend buying any of the pocket knives listed on this page.
Next, find a self-defense class for proper training. A knife is a great tool. However, a tool with no knowledge behind it may still be ineffective.
As you progress through your self-defense career you will learn that a knife may be used in a close quarters combat situation. However, just the sight of a knife will cause an attacker to panic and possibly escalate the situation. You must carefully consider whether compliance or fighting is the right option.
If someone attacks someone weaker than them, then they deserve what they get, in my opinion. Purchasing a top of the line knife is the first step in increasing your odds of staying safe in a self-defense situation, but ensure that the knife is in well trained hands.
If you draw a knife, then you want to make sure that it will end the fight.
Note: There is a popular theory in the law enforcement community that for distances under 21 feet (6.4m) a knife is more effective than a holstered gun. You are unlikely to encounter this exact scenario in a self-defense situation, but rather some form of it. However, it is important to emphasize the point that a knife is a more effective self-defense tool than you think.
