Review: the Benchmade Griptilian 551 EDC folding knife
The Griptilian 551 is a good choice for the casual knife user who is looking to make a step up into the world of high-quality knives.
It offers well-crafted materials wrapped into a clean, easily portable design that will make this knife your go-to everyday carry.
Who is this for?
Let’s not beat around the bush:
Benchmade’s Griptilian 551 is the perfect choice for travelers looking for a lightweight knife to bring with them on their travels.
Weighing only 3.84 oz and measuring at 8.07 inches, the Griptilian is exceptionally lightweight and small, making it portable enough to carry with you wherever you go.
Its drop-point design makes it especially useful as an all-around utility knife.
Whether you’re using it to gut a deer or to cut open boxes, the Griptilian is sturdy enough to handle whatever task you might come across.
What makes it good?
The Griptilian 551 offers exceptionally high quality for everyone from casual knife users to adamant blade purists.
Its blade is made of 154CM steel, which features incredibly high levels of chromium and carbon mixed with Molybdenum to create a lasting, durable blade. This ensures the blade will hold a razor sharp edge, meaning you’ll spend less time worrying about sharpening it and more time actually using the blade!
The 154CM steel is also corrosion and stain resistant, so you won’t have to worry about dirtying the blade. A quick wipe with a wet cloth should be all it takes to have your knife looking brand new!
Aside from its cutting-edge steel, the Griptilian 551 also features Benchmade’s famous AXIS lock!
The AXIS lock is made of a spring-tensioned bar that locks into place when the knife is opened. More importantly, however, the AXIS lock is completely ambidextrous, making this a good knife for anybody who is left-handed.
The AXIS lock also makes the Griptilian 551 a quick flick open knife that can be used easily with just one hand.
The simplicity of the Griptilian 551’s design makes it a great knife to use as an everyday carry.
Its blade is razor sharp and useful for general utility, while still being durable enough to cut or whittle almost anything. If it ever dulls, you can send it back to Benchmade for sharpening.
The knife is small and light enough to fit into your pocket and carry around alongside your other everyday carry essentials, while still being heavy enough to feel sturdy in your hand.

For travelers looking to make an upgrade to a well-made everyday carry, the Griptilian 551 is a great choice!
Its utilitarian design makes it easy to use and it’s durable build means you won’t have to spend too much time maintaining it.
The warranty offered by Benchmade is also an additional bonus, meaning you won’t have to worry about buying a new knife for many years to come.
The AXIS lock makes it a very fun knife, giving it a quick open flick and offering a dual hand experience. However, users should be aware that while AXIS locks are durable, they aren’t the most durable on the market. They’re also made of many different parts, meaning it might be difficult to take apart and clean.
The Griptilian is a great high-end beginner knife.
There are cheaper knives out there, but the quality typically won’t come even close to the Griptilian.
Similarly, there are better knives out there, but their price points will be considerably higher. When you consider the quality of the knife as well as the lifetime warranty, there’s no question that the Griptilian is worth it.
